Spinal Surgery Services

Brief Description:

The Spine Surgery Services at the Dr D Y Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Institute is a distinctive service offered by the this institution in a niche area, and it responds to a felt need of the local community. This institution is the only Deemed University Medical College Hospital to collaborate with Spine Foundation of India, Mumbai since 2019 to perform free, complex spinal surgeries for underprivileged sections of society in rural area around Kolhapur, using the expertise, training and support of the experienced SFI team. The available option was to refer patients from Kolhapur 250 Kms away to Pune or further away to Mumbai for availing appropriate treatment

The collaboration, enhanced by a MOU (2023) extended to capacity building, academic student exchange and has forged a service of immense value and output.

Participating Departments:

Target Patient Population: Underprivileged patients needing complex and advanced spinal surgeries.

Conditions Treated: Congenital and Acquired conditions of the Spine needing complex corrective surgeries like Scoliosis, TB Spine, Cervical conditions, Spondylolisthesis and Spondylosis, etc.

Program details:

Patients are seen in the regular Orthopaedic OPD by senior faculty. Those cases needing complex surgeries are then reviewed on a weekly basis in the hospital in partnership with TSFI panel in Mumbai via Virtual mode. Cases are presented by PG students in Orthopaedic who learn from the resulting discussion. Each Case is discussed in detail, opinion of all participating surgeons is taken, and a concrete plan of management is defined.

Cases within capabilities of local team are performed while complex, ‘cold’ cases are posted for operation later. The desired pre-operative evaluations and or physiotherapy needed are administered. The SFI Team visits the Hospital every 3 months to jointly operate on the complex cases which were deferred.

Recovery and Follow-up:

Post-operative management is done by the local team, with regular feedback to Mumbai team. Rehabilitation through focussed and planned physiotherapy is done at at the Dr D Y Patil Medical College Hospital and Research Institute Kolhapur, by Faculty and PG students of the D Y Patil College of Physiotherapy.

From 2019, the Spine Camps and OPDs have generated the following work:

Staff Expertise :

Our Partners: Rich in experience and academics, the TSFI team partners with our senior faculty to make a success of this initiative.

Medical Staff: Capacity building of the medical faculty of our institution in departments of Orthopaedic, Anaesthesia and Physiotherapy is accompanied by curricular enrichment of our postgraduate students from these three departments.

Support Staff: the exposure acquired by the Nursing & Physiotherapy staff and students will prove a significant contribution to the national pool of professional expertise and service.

 

Technology and Facilities :

Equipment Used: The intelligent use of the virtual communication facility for patient care has been a hallmark of this effort.

Facilities: State-of-the Art Operation Theatres and Diagnostic support of the Radiology and Pathology Departments in the NABH Accredited hospital were pivotal from the very onset.

  6. Student exchange program for Post Graduate Physiotherapy Students to expand their professional training in rehabilitative physiotherapy
  7. Experiential training for all Nursing, Technical and Physiotherapy staff in spinal rehabilitation
  8. Experiential training for students in Department of Anaesthesiology

Outcomes :

  1. MOU with The Spine Foundation India, Mumbai
  2. Equipment required for advanced spine surgery worth 36,50,853/- was donated by Rotary Club (Sunrise), strengthening community ties
  3. Hub for Spinal Deformity Correction being planned in institution
  4. Enrichment of curriculum for 3 major programs of MS Orthopaedics, MD Anaesthesiology, MSc Physiotherapy (Musculoskeletal)
  5. Student Exchange Program instituted
  6. Use of Hybrid OPDs for patient care started
