The D.Y. Patil Education Society (Institution Deemed to be University) was established under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956 vide MHRD notification No: F.9-26/2004-U-3 dated 01.09.2005. The Sponsoring Society is registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860 with Registration No. Maharashtra/32907/Kolhapur on 21.11.2013. The University is one of the premier educational institutes in the country and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various disciplines in Medicine and Allied Sciences. The University’s motto is ‘Dnyanadheenam Jagat Sarvam’ which means ‘Knowledge is Power’. All achievements reflect the paths defined in the Vision, Mission and Goal statements.

The University comprises of a Medical College, Nursing and Centre for Interdisciplinary Research [CIR]. The University also runs a tertiary-level, 800-bedded, ISO:9001-2015 certified multispecialty Hospital which offers high standard of highly subsidized (or free) health care. The constituent units are well equipped with lecture theatres, seminar halls, auditoriums, staff rooms, laboratories, Central, departmental & digital libraries, sports & recreation facilities and hostels. The University has acquired Telemedicine Centre, Skill Lab, Cadaveric Bioskills lab, Yoga Lab, RICH Cell (Research Innovations in Comprehensive Health- RT-PCR facility, Diabetes Care Centre, Andrology Centre), Multimedia room and Animal House which is duly recognized by CPCSEA. The campus is Wi-Fi. The Hospital and Research Laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that includes both advanced research equipment and instrumentation facilities.
A well-defined governance structure translates the mission and goal into concrete programs as per norms of UGC, MCI and INC. MoA 2010 is amended in line with UGC Regulations from time to time till 2016. The governance structure encourages transparent & independent functioning with delegation of authority and participatory management. Statutory bodies meet regularly. Financial Accountability is ensured by regular internal and annual external audits, publishing of annual report, submissions to UGC and adherence to the Accounts Code. The Corpus of Rs. 15 Cr. is maintained. IQAC plays a key role in enhancing the quality of academic, research, student support services and administrative functioning.
The University offers 53 programs recognized by apical bodies which are 03 UG, 5 Diploma, 28 PG, 05 Certificate courses, 10 Fellowships and 02 PhD programs. Innovative programs in emerging and thrust areas have been started viz. Applied Physics, Nanobiotechnology, Medical biotechnology, Medical Physics, Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine and Fellowships. Regular curricular redesigning and revision, CBCS system, unitization of curriculum, five enrichment modules, ICT in teaching-learning and assessment, Yoga practice all make curriculum contemporary and responsive to stakeholder feedback and current needs. Admissions are as per the existing regulations for relevant streams. Admission rules, criteria and fees are declared upfront, admission process is transparent.
ICT-based teaching-learning aids such as Integrated Learning Management System, Smart Boards, Visualizers & LCDs, AV-resources such as online journals and books, videos, image banks and access to databases (Pro-Quest, Pro-Quest Ebrary, INFLIBNET, NKN, MUHS e-resources) has made teaching-learning contemporary. These are facilitated by the Medical Education Unit (recognized by MCI for in-house faculty training). MEU, IQAC and motivated faculty led to PowerPoint in all lectures; OSPE, OSCE and MCQs in assessment, evidence based teaching and interactive teaching methods. Skill lab training, early clinical exposure, log books, telemedicine, health camps, field visits, UG research projects in internal assessment, student-research based interventions ensure an Outcome-Based Approach with emphasis on practical skills in keeping with ‘Skill India’ initiative. Students are exposed to specialized facilities outside and visiting/adjunct faculty & guest lectures supplement teaching. The University has organized International and National conferences and Workshops in large numbers. Examination reforms such as automation of the work of exam division, development of question bank, CCTV surveillance, coding and decoding of answer booklets, assessment of answer books through CAP and declaration of results within 15 days.
At the cost of Rs.10.66 Cr. in five years, enhanced advanced research facilities facilitate frontier level research eg. Nano scaffolds, Nanobiotechnology, biosensors, etc. The faculty have 874 publications (impact factor: 0.5-10.5) with 175 in emerging areas, 137 in SCOPUS & 134 in Web of Science, have authored 18 chapters & edited nine books in the last five years. The faculty is granted two International Patents and has 14 Indian patents. The University has overall h-Index of 28 and citation of 3076, citations since 2012 are 2605. The overall i10 index is 93.
Research projects worth Rs.838.25 lakhs have been sanctioned by funding agencies like ICMR, DST, CSIR, DRDO, BRNS, UGC, DBT (33 projects) and the University (24 projects). There are 58 registered Ph.D. Scholars. 210 UG & 410 PG research projects have been undertaken in last five years. Active collaborations include 11 international and 12 national MOUs. Collaborations with institutes in India, Australia, South Korea, China, Russia and United Kingdom exist. Research presentation platforms are provided for UG, PG and PhD students in addition to ANVESHAN. All research is guided and reviewed variously by Board of Postgraduate Teaching & Research, Research & Recognition Committee, Institutional Research Committee & relevant Ethics Committees. IPR Cell, anti-plagiarism policy, Softwares (Turnitin, SPSS), publication incentives, financial support & defined guidelines have enhanced research output quality. Research Methodology workshops for PG students and Pre-PhD students are regularly conducted.
The University ensures holistic student development, support and mentoring through orientation sessions, University Moral Guidance Scheme, Student Guardianship program, Student Council, PG Club, NSS, Women Development Cell, Internal Complaint Cell, Anti-ragging cell, Student Welfare Cell. Remedial classes, Counselling Center, Language class are some other measures. Students participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. In addition to social awareness walkathons, street plays and skits students participate in Swachchh Bharat Abhiyaan, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, save the girl child and other national efforts.
Public Private Partnership has led to adoption of 1 UHC & 4 PHCs covering a population of 1.5 Lakhs by the University. Telemedicine connectivity with 1 RHTC is in place. Village adoption scheme, Golden Age Golden Care Scheme have been started.
Environment consciousness is reflected in responsible conservation and preservation efforts in the college and hospital premises.
As part of ‘Digital India’ initiative the IT Cell of the University has undertaken many activities including customization of the Learning Management System, installation of OPAC in the library, training of faculty in LMS, SPSS & Turnitin and training of non-teaching staff in computer skills. Use of social media, email for communication has helped the move towards paperless offices.

- The University was placed at ‘A’ Grade in 2012 and Reaccredited ‘A’ Grade in 2017 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
- Europe Business Assembly, Oxford, U.K. has awarded ‘Best University’ Award for five years in 2013.
- India Today and NIELSEN has ranked D.Y.Patil University’s D.Y.Patil Medical College, Kolhapur at third place in western zone and on 15th rank on all India in India’s Best Colleges 2017.
- This University has been also awarded with 3rd CMAI CCI Technology Education Excellence Award 2015 at Ahmedabad.
- The University was honoured with the ‘Campus Preparedness Award-2015’ by Campus Management, Pune for felicitating the preparedness of India Campuses for Global Excellence.
- This academic year the University has been selected for the UNESCO chair in Bio-ethics.
- Maharashtra Economics Summit Mumbai declared the D. Y. Patil Medical College as Best Institute and also awarded Pride of Maharashtra Award in 2019.
