New opportunities in the field of Medicine- Cadaveric Bioskills Lab

In the medical curriculum, knowledge of human anatomy is pre-requisite and essential. As medical professionals importance of anatomical cadaveric dissection during the initial days of career is well known. The study of human cadaveric anatomy is an important stepping stone to transfer the students into skilled physicians and surgeons. Even after the completion of their medical education, the physicians and surgeons repeatedly turn again towards the knowledge of anatomy. For surgical branches, cadaveric dissection provides opportunity to master surgical techniques and minimally invasive procedures before they are attempted on patients. In age of fast changing technology and increased focus on patient’s safety, providing society with skilled doctors must be considered as vital.

The D. Y. Patil University, D. Y. Patil Medical College, Kolhapur and the Department of Anatomy have taken a revolutionary change by introducing the concept of developing a Cadaveric Bioskills Lab. This lab has the distinction of being the first to impart cadaveric training for medical students as well as medical professionals.

The Management of D. Y. Patil University, D. Y. Patil Medical College, Kolhapur; and  the entire Anatomy Department is proud to announce the inauguration of a first-of-its kind Cadaveric Bioskills Lab in the State of Maharashtra and third  of its kind in India.

A Cadaveric Bioskills lab is a facility in which individual doctors or team of doctors can be trained on models. Frozen soft  embalmed cadavers are used for medical education, imparting surgical skills, as well as the skilled surgeons begin hands on training in new surgical techniques, before the skilled surgeons begin working with actual patients.

Such facilities were hitherto less in India, but the foresight and initiative of the Management of D.Y.Patil Medical College has resulted in unique Air- Conditioned Cadaveric Bioskills Lab in the precincts of the Medical College at Kolhapur. This lab provides an excellent atmosphere for training and research.

This Bioskills lab has been established with an aim to impart training skills required by surgical specialties like Orthopedics, General Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, ENT, Critical Care Medicine etc. Skill training will ensure required competence with the help of uses renowned national and international faculty guiding the trainee.

In the initial phase, training of the orthopedic surgeons in the science of arthroscopic surgery will be undertaken. Minimally invasive surgery of the human joints is the need of the time, replacing the disfiguring and painful open joint surgeries in many cases. Our facility is designed especially for arthroscopy and can train four surgeons at one time for various techniques.

Another achievement of the Department of Anatomy in this is the efforts of the faculty for the formulation and preparation of the embalming fluid used to prepare the cadavers. This embalming fluid has been prepared in-house giving a distinct cost and convenience advantage while preserving the cadaveric tissues in optimum condition. With this technology the cadavers remain soft and supple which give the surgeons a real feel of surgery.

The bioskills lab is fully equipped with recent and modern instruments which are required for the skill enhancements of the participants.

The lab has been set up as Joint Venture between M/s Everest Medical Technologies Pvt Ltd, Mumbai, a company leading in the field of arthroscopy business and the D. Y..Patil Medical College, Kolhapur.

The technical team leading the execution includes Dr Rakesh Sharma, Dean D. Y. Patil Medical College, Dr. Vasudha Nikam, Professor and Head Department of Anatomy, Dr. Deepak Sahasrabudhe, leading Arthroscopist, Kolhapur and Mr. Ganesh Devrajan, Director, Everest Medical Technologies Pvt Ltd, Mumbai.
