Recently, Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi has sanctioned a Research Project with outlay of Rs. 32.84 lakhs to Dr. Arvind Gulbake, Coordinator, Research & Development, CIR. The duration of Project is three years. The sanctioned amount includes Rs. 23 lakhs for the purchase of new equipment required for research and salary of one Junior Research Fellow. The Research Project is related to the development of “SURFACE MODIFIED MAGNETIC SOLID LIPID NANOPARTICLES FOR IMAGING AND HYPERTHERMIA WITH DUAL DRUG THERAPY IN COLON CANCER”. In this project, Dr. Gulbake will develop surface modified spherical MSLNs containing dual drugs (curcumin and 5-Fluorouracil) as a versatile nanotool for theranostic application against colon cancer. Hon’ble President Dr. Sanjay D. “Prime Minister Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research: A Golden Opportunity”- Mr. S. S. Kohli (DST-SERB)

D.Y. Patil University, Kolhapur has hosted a One day Workshop on “PRIME MINISTER’S FELLOWSHIP SCHEME FOR DOCTORAL RESEARCH” organized by Department of Science and Technology-Science Engineering Research Board (DST-SERB) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), New Delhi. This workshop was conducted to create awareness about the fellowship scheme to the faculty members, research supervisors, research scholars and others. Mr. S.S. Kohli, Scientist G and advisor, DST and Member-Secretary, Apex Council- PM Fellowship scheme, was the Chief Guest for the workshop. The other Guest of honor was Ms. Shalini. S. Sharma, Member-Secretary, Apex Council – PM Fellowship Scheme, Senor Consultant and head, Higher Education, CII. There was also other key session from Forbes Marshall Pvt. Ltd, Pune. Besides, question and answer session between the audience and the stalwarts gained immense attention. There were about 130 participants in the workshop coming all over from Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnatak etc.

The workshop has been inaugurated with lamp lighting, Ganesh Vandana and with the blessings of Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj in the presence of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.B. Behere, Chief Guest Mr. S.S. Kohli, Guest of Honor Ms. Shalini. S. Sharma, Dean of Medical College Dr. R.K. Sharma, Research Director Dr. C.D. Lokhande. The programme coordinator Dr. S. Indumathi welcomed the gathering. This was followed by the key note address of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor. He elucidate about the emergence of the workshop and its impact. The Guest of Honor Ms. Shalini. S. Sharma introduced the Prime minister’s fellowship scheme to the audience. She explained about the scheme, eligibility criteria, broad criteria for selection, selection process and the funding support. She also added the research projects that have already been awarded under this scheme and enlightened about the significance of industry-academia partnership. She concluded with a great inspirational video, in which, various PM fellow awardees shared their experiences. The audience was immensely benefited through active question and answer session. Mr. Abhijeet Deshpande and Shripad Kulkarni from Forbes Marshall Pvt. Ltd, Pune introduced various schemes and fellowships of CII and the active role of CII in industry-academia partnership. They also added how Forbes Marshall would help the students under this scheme. This was followed by an active inspirational session, where the PM fellow awardees like Mr. Sushruth Bhanushali from IIT Mumbai and Mr. Abhijeet Deshpande from NCL, Pune, shared their experiences and highlighted the industry oriented view in selecting a research project for the fellowship. The session finally ended with a vibrant talk by the Chief Guest Mr. S.S. Kohli, Scientist G and Advisor, DST-SERB. He spoke about various fellowship schemes such as Ramanujan fellowship and fellowship schemes for women and extramural projects available under SERB. He also appraised the audience to choose the right scheme for application and some other suggestions regarding the application of fellowship and funding. The session was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dean of Medical College Dr. R.K. Sharma.

To conclude, “Your imagination is your preview of life's coming attractions”, as quoted by Einstein, we foresee this workshop have helped the research students to realize the importance of PM fellowship and other fellowship available under DST-SERB of Government of India to achieve their long awaited career goals.

Recently, Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi has sanctioned a Research Project outlay of Rs. 37 lakhs to Prof. C. D. Lokhande, Research Director. The duration of Project is three years. The sanctioned amount includes Rs. 20 lakhs for the purchase of new equipments required for research and salary of one Junior Research Fellow. The Research Project is related to the development of supercapacitive devices useful for medical electronics.

Prof. Lokhande has already completed 16 Research Projects to the tune of Rs. 2.5 crores funded by various agencies such as DST, DAE-BRNS, CSIR, UGC, AICTE, DRDO etc.

Prof. C. D. Lokhande delivered M.R. Bhidey lecture at Maharashtra Academy of Science (M.A.Sc.) in its meeting held on 9th November 2016 at National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. M.A.Sc. during its annual general meeting inducts newly elected fellow and younger associates every year. Before induction ceremony, M.R. Bhidey lecture is being organized.

Prof. Lokhande spoke on ‘super capacitive devices for electronics’, in which he presented materials to device approach. The lecture was well attended by more than 200 academy fellows and office bearers of M.A.Sc., including Prof. G.D.Yadav, President, M.A.Sc.

A Ph.D. student of D. Y. Patil University Mrs. Apurva Birajdar has bagged 1st best poster Presentation award in “7th International Conference on Stem Cells and Cancer (ICSCC- 2016)” held at Margao, Goa during 21st- 23rd Oct. 2016. She has presented a poster on a part of research work under DST- SERB funded project. Her research supervisor, Dr. Indumathi Somasundaram, Assistant Prof., Dept. of Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine, was invited as a speaker in this conference. She spoke on Proliferation, differentiation and Angiogenic ability of human Endometrial stem cells: A key player in regenerative medicine. She focused on the possible use of Endometrial stem cells in treating vascular disorders. She also mentioned endometrial stem cells as a double edged sword, highlighting its curative approach and as a culprit in causing diseases. The presented research work was very well appreciated by participants and scientists who gave a proud memorable moment to Department and the University.
